Lindsay Lohan has been through a lot in the last decade, going from superstar in some of our favorite movies (Mean Girls, duh) to struggling with substance abuse. But after so many ups and downs, she landed herself a television series, Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club.
The series focuses on the management of her beach club in Mykonos, Greece, along with her staff members at the club. Lohan also owns two other night clubs in Athens and Ialysos. So far, there’s been plenty of drama — Vanderpump Rules cast, eat your hearts out! — but in the most recent episode, we got to see Lohan take a break from her busy schedule as a club owner and spend time with her friend, Nico Tortorella.
Who is Nico Tortorella? Aside from being Lohan’s longtime friend, his guest appearance on the show included the pair trying Cryotherapy, with Lohan joking that it was funny to make him try it: “I don’t think Nico really needed to do it. But I thought it would be funny to make them do it. Because you always love to torture someone you love for no reason … but in a healthy way!”
You may have seen Tortorella on television, but here are five details to know about Lohan’s close friend.
1. Tortorella identifies as genderfluid.
As such, they prefer to use the “they/them” pronouns. In 2016, they revealed they are “fluid.” “I’ve never been in any sort of closet… I was never really in the house. I think it’s one thing to hide… and it’s one thing to come out of the closet in a public statement. But I’ve always done me and never been shy and have been vocal about it.”
In another interview, they identified as bisexual, saying, “The more I’m having these conversations, the more comfortable I am identifying as bisexual. I’ve been so hesitant about using the word for so long, because it does have a negative connotation in our generation. People fought for so long for that ‘B’ in LGBT, and I refuse to be the person that’s going to throw that away because I think I have a more colorful word.”
2. They’ve known Lohan for quite some time.
As far back as 2011 is when their friendship began. Tortorella was also named on an alleged sex list of Lohan’s, though neither have confirmed this. Tortorella published a photo of the two of them at Six Flags in 2011, and they “proposed” to her, which obviously turned out to be a joke.
“We’ve known each other a really long time and it’s important that we maintain our friendship. I think we’ve succeeded at that really well,” Lohan said. She also said they have a “brother and sister” relationship.
3. They’re an actor.
Tortorella has acted in Scream 4, The Following, Make It or Break It, Twelve, Hunger&Game, and in 2014, landed a role on the television series Younger. They also currently have a podcast called The Love Bomb.
4. They’re married.
In 2018, Tortorella and Bethany Meyers married at a NYC clerk’s office and exchanged vows at St. Paul’s Chapel. Meyers also identifies as genderfluid and uses the “they/them” pronouns.
5. But their marriage is anything but conventional.
Though the couple met in 2006, they have a unique relationship. In an InStyle interview, Tortorella said, “Bethany and I have been together in one way or another for 12 years, and we are the exact opposite of a traditional marriage. We don’t even live together, and we are queer and polyamorous…
Being married has just solidified the ‘no matter what.’ It has strengthened the ‘forever’ aspect. Before we were married, I think there was always a possibility of us marrying somebody else. But now that we have literally tied the knot, it sets the guidelines for any secondary and tertiary relationships to be different than what they have been in the past…
I’m super demisexual when it comes to secondary relationships, or any relationships really. If I’m not emotionally invested, I’m not having sex with you. It’s just not going to work. But Bethany and I also navigate relationships the same way. We are individuals and we see love, gender, and relationships completely differently. We respect that in each other, and we allow each other that space to explore.”
